Why Choose Sagis
What is the primary difference between Sagis and large commercial labs?
We are a 100% physician-owned and privately held dermatopathology group. Our model, “Built By Physicians For Physicians,” ensures pathologist accountability and a focus on diagnostic accuracy over volume.
Who owns and operates Sagis?
Sagis is 100% physician-owned and led by board-certified dermatopathologists. This independent structure guarantees unbiased diagnostic results and clinical focus.
What subspecialty expertise do the Sagis pathologists hold?
Pathologists are physician experts who examine tissues and perform lab tests to diagnose disease and guide treatment decisions. At Sagis, every case is reviewed by board-certified diagnostic pathologists with advanced subspecialty training.
Our team includes experts in dermatopathology, hematopathology, gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology, renal pathology, genitourinary pathology, cytopathology, and more. This depth of specialization ensures your diagnosis is evaluated by a pathologist with focused expertise in that specific area of medicineódelivering greater accuracy and diagnostic confidence.

How does a physician or clinic set up service to submit specimens to Sagis?

- Toxicology specimens: urine and oral fluid
Visit our collection guides for detailed specimen requirements by specialty.
What happens after a biopsied specimen arrives at the lab?
The specimen undergoes a multi-step process: Accessioning (receiving, labeling, and uniquely identifying the specimen in the laboratory system), Gross Examination (macroscopic assessment and description), Tissue Processing (overnight fixation and embedding in paraffin wax), Sectioning (slicing the tissue into strips thinner than a red blood cell and mounting on a slide), Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) Staining (coloring the tissue to highlight cellular and tissue structures), and finally, Microscopic Examination and diagnosis by a board-certified pathologist.
What is the typical turnaround time for diagnostic results?
Standard cases have a turnaround time of 24-48 hours. If immunohistochemical (IHC) studies are required for diagnostic clarification, the turnaround time extends to 48-72 hours. Toxicology: Results are typically available within 24-48 hours of specimen receipt at the laboratory. Our team prioritizes both speed and diagnostic accuracy to support timely patient care decisions.
Quality & Support
How does Sagis ensure diagnostic accuracy?
We ensure accuracy through:
1. Subspecialty Training (cases are reviewed by pathologists with deep expertise in pathology); 2. Accreditation (maintaining CAP and CLIA standards, plus holding a Clinical Laboratory Permit from the New York State Department of Health); 3. Quality Control (internal peer review and sign-out conferences); and 4. Advanced Diagnostics (strategic use of IHC and Molecular Testing for challenging cases).
Can I consult directly with the pathologist who analyzed my patient's case?
Yes. We prioritize personalized physician-to-pathologist communication. Our subspecialty-trained pathologists are readily available for direct one-on-one consultations, second opinions, and collaborative case reviews for complex or challenging diagnoses.
What should I do if I have questions about a diagnostic report?
Sagis pathologists are readily available for direct physician-to-pathologist consultation. You can request a consultation through our online Consultation Request form, or contact your pathologist directly. We prioritize personalized communication and encourage collaborative discussion on complex or challenging diagnoses.
Does Sagis offer second opinions on pathology cases?
Yes. Our subspecialty-trained pathologists are available for second opinions and collaborative case reviews. Through our Material Transfer service and consultation request process, referring physicians can access expert re-evaluation of complex or challenging diagnoses to ensure diagnostic confidence.
How does Sagis handle complex or rare diagnoses?
Complex cases receive collaborative review by our team of subspecialty-trained pathologists. We utilize advanced diagnostic tools including immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH), and molecular testing when needed. For exceptionally rare or challenging cases, we consult with world-class expert partners to ensure the most accurate diagnosis possible. Our pathologists also participate in internal peer review and sign-out conferences to maintain diagnostic excellence.
Reports & Access
How do I access and share pathology reports with my patients?
All diagnostic reports are available through Vital Axis, our secure online reporting portal. Physicians can access, download, and share reports directly with patients through their electronic medical record systems. For toxicology results, reports are accessible via CareEvolve. Both platforms provide real-time access to finalized reports.
What is SEAM (Sagis EHR Access Module)?
SEAM is Sagis’ automated EHR integration platform that streamlines lab ordering and results delivery directly within your existing electronic health record system. The platform eliminates additional staff training by working seamlessly with your current EHR, reducing IT workload and the need for in-house technical expertise. SEAM provides enhanced security and HIPAA compliance, allowing you to focus on providing services while reducing risk.
How does SEAM improve my practice's workflow?
SEAM significantly reduces administrative burden by securely auto-completing patient information at the time of order, reducing clicks and manual entry, and generating accurate and complete orders. The platform presents easy-to-read lab results with notation features, reduces callbacks for missing billing information, and minimizes human error. By automating these workflows, SEAM allows your staff to focus on patients, revenue, and resourcesóultimately facilitating better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
