Notes

After the needle is capped, hold the syringe upright (needle-end up) to avoid losing any contents, grab the base of the needle (hub) and twist counterclockwise (left) to remove it. Safely dispose of the needle into a sharps container.

Next, obtain a black syringe tip cap, provided by Sagis, to cap the syringe. Screw the black syringe tip cap into the syringe hub (twisting to the right) while keeping the syringe upright. Lay the syringe flat to label it using the specimen container labels provided by Sagis.

Write the patient’s name, date of birth, and specimen source (body site that was aspirated) with laterality (right vs. left) on the label. Specifically for aspirate samples: send these to Sagis STAT due to specimen stability requirements and include an ice pack with the sample for transport.
