In recognition of their extraordinary dedication to patient care, double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist Dr. Christopher Chu and his wife Dr. Chelsey Straight, a double board-certified and fellowship-trained dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, were awarded the prestigious Presidential Citation Award by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). This award celebrates their heroic efforts in identifying and treating a melanoma, ultimately saving a life.
In June 2023, during a family holiday train ride, Dr. Chu and Dr. Straight noticed a distinctive spot on the face of a fellow passenger, Mr. Chris Meffen. Exhibiting the true spirit of compassionate care, they approached Mr. Meffen and inquired about the spot. Learning that it had been present for nearly five years without examination, they recommended he seek a professional evaluation.
Following their advice, Mr. Meffen scheduled an appointment at Pure Dermatology, the doctors’ recently established practice in Austin. Subsequent examination revealed the spot to be melanoma, a potentially deadly form of skin cancer. Thanks to the prompt intervention of skilled dermatopathology services, Mr. Meffen underwent successful removal of the melanoma, for which he is forever grateful.
The prompt diagnosis and treatment from Dr. Chu and Dr. Straight did not go unnoticed. National press coverage highlighted the story, shedding light on the vital role experienced dermatopathologists play in screening and diagnosing various skin cancers and conditions while raising public awareness about the importance of early detection.
