Vlahovic, a pioneering figure in podiatric dermatology, has been awarded the 2024 Podiatry Management Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the Podiatry Management Hall of Fame. This accolade acknowledges Dr. Vlahovic’s groundbreaking contributions to podiatric medicine, particularly her efforts to educate and advance the understanding of lower extremity skin conditions.

Dr. Vlahovic’s journey began at Yale University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. Her innovative approach to podiatric dermatology marks her unique path from competitive ballroom dancer to distinguished podiatrist. She graduated from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) and completed a two-year surgical residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, PA. She then became the world’s first podiatrist to complete a fellowship in podiatric dermatology, setting the stage for a career dedicated to this subspecialty.

For over two decades, Dr. Vlahovic has been a trailblazer, educating students, practicing podiatrists, and other healthcare providers about lower extremity skin conditions. Her influence extends beyond the classroom and clinic, with hundreds of articles, blogs, and interviews, and numerous lectures at medical conferences across the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Vlahovic’s efforts have significantly elevated the podiatric profession, fostering collaboration with allopathic and osteopathic medical communities, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries.

Dr. Vlahovic’s dedication to education is unparalleled. She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, participated in more than 20 skin and nail clinical trials, published seven book chapters, and written three textbooks focused on dermatology, including a seminal work on onychomycosis and an atlas of lower extremity skin disease. Her contributions to the field have earned her numerous accolades, including the awards for the Clinician of the Year, Professor of the Year, and Teacher of the Year. She is double board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

When Barry Block announced that I was this year’s inductee into the Hall of Fame, I was shocked and still am. As the 41st podiatrist and second woman inducted (after Stephanie Wu), I’m deeply grateful, humbled, and honored. Thank you to my friends and colleagues for their lovely tributes.

Over my 20+ year career, I’ve taught and treated thousands, and met countless healthcare practitioners who inspired me. My incredible education fueled my goal to give back through teaching, research, and clinical work.

I’ve truly hit the jackpot in this lifetime. Thank you to those who recognize my dedication.

Dr. Vlahovic’s colleagues speak highly of her. Dr. William Scherer, who has worked with her for many years, praises her ability to connect with and inspire students and colleagues alike. “Tracey’s greatest gift as a physician is teaching. She has touched the lives of hundreds of students with her wit and concise teaching style, making dermatology understandable and practical.”

Dr. Vlahovic’s impact on the podiatric world is profound. Through her extensive knowledge and research, she has revolutionized the treatment of skin and nail disorders. Her compassion for patients, teaching prowess, and love for medicine make her a deserving recipient of this prestigious award. Dr. Elena K. Wellens, Assistant Clinical Professor at TUSPM, highlights her influence: “Tracey is an authoritative expert in podiatric dermatology. Her passion for education is contagious, making her a favorite among students and colleagues.”

Despite her numerous achievements, Dr. Vlahovic remains driven and grateful. Her dedication to advancing podiatric dermatology and her ability to captivate and educate audiences with her lectures testify to her passion and expertise. Dr. Vlahovic’s colleagues, students, and patients agree that she is a true trailblazer and visionary in the field.

As Dr. Jeffrey D. Lehrman aptly says, “Dr. Vlahovic has redefined what it means to ‘break glass ceilings’ as a podiatrist. Her accomplishments are countless, and her impact on the profession is immeasurable.”
Dr. Vlahovic’s induction into the Podiatry Management Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to her extraordinary career and contributions to podiatric dermatology. The profession is fortunate to have such a dedicated and inspiring leader, and her legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence future generations of podiatrists.
