About Dermatopahtology

Dermatopathology is a specialized subspecialty at the intersection of dermatology and pathology. It focuses on diagnosing diseases of the skin, hair, and nails at a microscopic and molecular level. When a biopsy is performed, dermatopathologists examine the tissue to render a definitive diagnosis, whether for skin cancer, inflammatory conditions, or other cutaneous diseases.

Our dermatopathologists evaluate the full breadth of skin, hair, nail, and soft tissue disease. This includes melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, complex inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, melanocytic lesions, cutaneous lymphoma and leukemia, and rare malignant neoplasms such as sarcoma. For difficult or diagnostically ambiguous cases, our team reviews collaboratively before issuing a final report.

Working With Sagis

Setting up service is simple. Contact your local sales representative to establish your account by finding your territory rep using our Find My Sales Rep Map or by submitting our Become A New Client form. After setup is complete, you can easily order specimen supplies, requisition forms, and courier services through your rep or directly via our Supplies & Requests portal.

Sagis is 100% dermatopath-owned and built. Our board-certified dermatopathologists trained at world-renowned academic institutions and bring collective expertise across the full spectrum of skin disease, from common inflammatory conditions to rare malignancies. Unlike high-volume reference labs, we operate collaboratively, consulting on complex cases internally before finalizing a report. Referring physicians also have direct access to our dermatopathologists for one-on-one consults and second opinions.

We accept a full range of cutaneous specimens, including shave biopsies, punch biopsies, excisions, re-excisions, and Mohs tissue. We also evaluate hair, nail, and soft tissue specimens. If you have a question about a specific specimen type, contact your local sales rep directly.

Yes. When a case requires additional workup, we perform immunohistochemistry (IHC), direct immunofluorescence (DIF), and special stains in-house to support the most accurate diagnosis possible.

Yes. Sagis is a CAP- and CLIA-accredited medical diagnostic laboratory based in Houston, Texas. We also hold a Clinical Laboratory Permit from the New York State Department of Health. These accreditations reflect a rigorous commitment to quality, accuracy, and consistency in laboratory testing and reporting.

Most skin biopsy results are available within 24 to 72 hours of specimen receipt. Routine cases are typically reported within 24 to 48 hours. Complex cases requiring additional testing, such as immunohistochemistry or special stains, may take 48 to 72 hours or slightly longer.

Reports & Physician Support

Sagis can work with all EMRs for electronic reporting. Results can also be delivered through our secure online portal, which provides immediate access to finalized reports. Critical or unexpected findings are communicated directly and promptly.

Absolutely. Direct access to our dermatopathologists is one of the things that sets Sagis apart. We are readily available for one-on-one consultations, whether you have a question before submitting a specimen or need to discuss a finalized report.

Yes. We provide second-opinion consultations on outside cases, including challenging melanocytic lesions, inflammatory conditions, and rare neoplasms. If you have a case that warrants another look, we welcome the opportunity to review it.
