Dr. Willmar Patiño is board-certified in dermatopathology by both the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Pathology.  He received his medical degree at the University of Antioquia School of Medicine in Medellin, Colombia.

Dr. Patiño completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in fetal gene therapy at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston (MA) and The Wilson Genetics Laboratory, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, The George Washington University, Washington (DC). He furthered his postdoctoral research fellowship in molecular biology of cardiovascular diseases at the Cardiovascular Branch, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda (MD). He then pursued his degree in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (TX) and completed his Dermatopathology fellowship at The Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology in New York (NY).

Amidst his professional affiliations, most notably are The International Society of Dermatopathology, The American Society of Dermatopathology, The American Academy of Dermatology and the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Patiño has performed research in such topics as genomic analyses, epigenetics of cutaneous melanoma, cytogenetics of lipomatus tumors, application of SAGE to cardiovascular medicine, and has published in various journals including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Advanced Dermatology, American Journal of Dermatopathology and Circulation Research to name a few. Dr. Patiño ‘s interests include challenging melanocytic lesions, infectious diseases, alopecia, podiatry and adnexal neoplasms.
